Marquette Junior Wildcats-Main Street Pizza defends Midget BB youth hockey state championship

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Junior Wildcats-Main Street Pizza youth hockey team successfully defended its state championship at the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association’s 18-under Midget BB state tournament that was held at Lakeview Arena in Marquette the weekend of March 18-20.

Hosted by Marquette Junior Hockey, the event culminated with Marquette’s 11-0 thrashing of Fraser Big Boy in the championship game on that Sunday afternoon, according to information from team manager Patty Blemberg.

This Junior Wildcats team finished its season with an unblemished 36-0-0 record.

Marquette opened round-robin play with a close 4-3 win over the Soo Co-op Credit Union of Sault Ste. Marie on Friday night.

Then on Saturday, Main Street Pizza blanked Redford Jimmy Johns 7-0 before dispatching Fraser Big Boy Hockey Club 8-3.

Their undefeated pool play record insured the Junior Wildcats of a place in the semifinals on Sunday, where they blanked Redford Jimmy Johns 10-0 to advance to the title tilt.

In the other semifinal, Fraser downed the Soo 4-3 in overtime to set up a rematch of the 2021 final when Main Street Pizza bumped off Big Boy 5-1 at Patterson Ice Center in Grand Rapids.

Playing at home, Marquette was dominant in its 11-goal shutout in this year’s finals.
